MySQL User Camp, Bangalore - February 13th, 2019

At MySQL we love opportunities to interact with our users and MySQL User Camp gives us the chance to do just that. The first MySQL User Camp of this year was held on February 13th 2019 at the Oracle Kalyani Magnum Office. User Camps serve as a great platform for sharing expertise through presentations, discussions and demonstrations as well as for users to share their experiences with MySQL.

This edition of the User Camp saw a great turnout of MySQL users (new and veteran) and MySQL enthusiasts from other Oracle Business Units and companies like Flipkart, Mydbops, Ola Cabs, Ubq technologies, AWS, DTDC Express ltd, Infosys, Freshworks, Kohima Infintech, Searce Inc and more.

The event commenced with a welcome note by Ashish Padiyar from MySQL Server QA team stating the history and motive of the MySQL User Camp and the agenda for the day.

Santhinesh Nagendran, Sr. DBA at Tesla, California took over with a presentation on his “Experience with MySQL HA solutions and Group replication”. He touched upon HA topics like reliability, complexities associated with failovers, monitoring cluster status and his observations and suggestions. He expressed that he was impressed with the stability provided by MySQL Group Replication along with MySQL Router and MySQL Shell utilities. You can find slides from his presentation here and the recorded talk here. After his presentation our MySQL engineers had discussions and answered queries of customers pertaining to their use of Group Replication.

“Which was the latest released version of MySQL?”
Questions like this and more gave the attendees a chance to win exciting MySQL goodies during a fun quiz!

This was followed by a presentation by Sr. DBA Pon Suresh Pandian and DBA Vignesh Prabhu, Mydbops on “JSON Improvements in MySQL 8.0”. Their talk covered the various JSON functions available in MySQL for manipulation, formatting, searching and stats collection, performance improvement scenarios in 8.0 as well as production use cases. JSON related features always piques interest of our users and a long and enlightening question and answer session followed. You can find the presentation slides here.

The User Camp ended with a vote of thanks from Malika Agarwal, MySQL Server QA thanking our users for their active participation and the speakers for their time. MySQL India Director Sanjay Manwani felicitated the speakers with a token of appreciation.

The camp then opened up for networking and Q&A where users could get their queries addressed by the MySQL team and the team could get valuable feedback over doughnuts and coffee.

We received positive feedback as well as topic suggestions for future editions from the attendees.

I would like to thank the user community for their continued patronage and making this edition of the MySQL User Camp a great success.
